About Hong Zhou MBBS MSc MPH MHFA

Hong has a great passion for languages and cultures. When studying at medical school, she won the Special Prize of  "the first English Language Contest for Chinese University Students", of which the contestants were over one million. She was then awarded several prestigious international scholarships to study in the West, and has obtained comprehensive knowledge of health science, law, psychology, history, philosophy, art and more.

The successful experience of learning English as a foreign language has enabled her to develop unique and highly effective methods to learn and teach foreign languages. Her Japanese and Korean languages skills have reached an intermediate to advanced level after six months self-study. She is currently teaching herself French. Moreover, she completed "the first UK based Professional Training Programme on Chinese Language Teaching, delivered by the Confucius Institute Headquarters" in 2010. She also teaches Korean and Japanese.

She can stimulate your curiosity and motivate you to learn in an exhilarating, creative and persistent way. If you are a beginner, it is guaranteed that you can have basic conversations after two to three sessions, or even feel confident to deliver an informal speech. She also helped clients get excellent marks in GCSE and HSK exams.

Pablo Picasso said: “If I were born Chinese, I would not be a painter but a writer. I'd write my pictures.” It demonstrates that the beauty of Chinese Calligraphy is highly appreciated in the world of art. Greatly influenced by her late father, Hong has been practising Calligraphy for decades. Her works were previously exhibited in Finland as well as featured on the official poster of a movie named Jade Warrior, which was coproduced by Holland, China, Finland and Estonia . She was also invited to have an exhibition at "the first European Bob Dylan Symposium" held in Caen, France, even the American Consul attended its opening ceremony. She taught a professor from the Royal College of Art and university students studying East Asian languages and related cultures. Recently, Hong won the  Creative Award, UK for her calligraphy and paintings.

Several years ago, Hong was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to learn Jingan & Changshou Gong, a type of martial arts practised secretly within the Chinese Taoists communities. It shares a common rationale with Chinese Calligraphy practice, of which the essence is the follow of Qi and energy.

Further, Hong was born and grew up in Southwest China, where 25 Ethnic Minorities reside. This gave her an advantage to learn a wide range of dances since childhood. When studying  at school and university, she was selected to be the Head of the Literature and Art Committee and acted as a lead choreographer and dancer in various performances to celebrate seasonal festivals. As part of her Korean and Japanese self-studies, she also practices Korean and Japanese dances.

Testimonials

"I have now been taking language lessons (Korean, Japanese and Chinese) with Hong Zhou for over 6 months and every lesson give me a chance to learn something new. Hong’s wide knowledge of the world as well as the languages has been very helpful and really excelled my learning. I have loved and enjoyed every minute of my sessions with Hong. Throughout our time together Hong has taught me in creative ways that manage to link all three of the languages; this means that I have been able to learn much faster than I would’ve been able to. I look forward to keep learning with Hong and I am excited to see how far she can help me go"

"Hong Zhou has been teaching my daughter Mandarin for a while now and has inspired a passion in not only the language itself, but also the Chinese people, history and culture.

The ability to work with and inspire someone and to get them to believe that they can do something, which to them initially appears so different and potentially impossible, and make it interesting and create a sense of progress, achievement and passion is a tremendous skill.

The enthusiasm that Jo brings to her teaching and her ability to connect with and make the whole learning of a Mandarin a joy to my daughter makes her a very special teacher"

-Marcus Nettelton, London

"We started learning Japanese as complete beginners and have found Hong really helpful in getting us into the language. We very much wanted to communicate with our Japanese in-laws and she has helped to guide us along the way to being able to do this. She is calm, patient and knowledgeable with all our questions about the language and she has made learning the language fun, even when the going is hard, trying to learn the vocabulary and the different alphabets. We strongly recommend Hong's very personal approach, which she is willing to adapt to individual needs".
